Winter Speaker Series: Racing the Solstice to the Arctic Circle

In summer 2024, Lowell’s Boat Shop’s Executive Director Graham McKay traveled as a member of crew leadership aboard Maine Maritime Academy’s historic Schooner Bowdoin with hopes to reach the Arctic circle by June 21… the solstice. Would they make it? With no control over weather or ice forecasts, students crewing offshore for the first time, and other potential setbacks, any sailor worth their salt would hope for the best and plan for the worst in one of the most challenging climates in the world.
