In this Introduction to Tools and Woodworking class we’ll begin with the most basic concepts and skills, then build on that foundation. If you are intimidated by tools and the idea of working with your hands, don’t worry, that is exactly the focus of this class. The goal is to use tools and build something. You can do this!

We’ll meet for two 5-hour sessions with a goal of understanding and then using common hand tools needed for home repair and beginning woodworking projects. We will explore what tools to buy and which ones to avoid. We will use simple power tools, drills and fasteners, and learn how to sharpen hand tools. Then we’ll practice these new skills as each student builds a small step stool.

These small 2-step stools are useful for reaching tall cabinets and shelves, or for use as a plant stand in a sunny spot. More importantly though, as a first project they allow students to practice a variety of new woodworking skills. The pace in the class will be relaxed and catered to the student’s needs and questions.

Your Instructor: For over 40 years Bill Thomas has been a woodworker, designing and building custom projects—from cabinetry and furniture, to sailboats, powerboats, kayaks and canoes—for a wide range of clients. He teaches woodworking and boatbuilding in numerous locations around the country, including Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, the WoodenBoat School in Maine, and Arrowmont in Tennessee, and offers online classes through Craftsy and Off Center Harbor.
